Lot 106:
Exceedingly Rare May 1, 1786 South Carolina “Abernathe” Contemporary Counterfeit Ten Pounds Payable in “Gold or Silver Coin” Ex: F.C.C. Boyd-John J. Ford, Jr.

May 1, 1786, (Acts of 1785 & 1786) South Carolina Colonial Currency, Loan Office Bills of Credit receivable for Taxes, Ten Pounds, Contemporary Counterfeit, Payable in “Gold or Silver Coin”, the Original Notes Engraved by Thomas Abernathe of Charleston, PCGS graded Very Good-10.
Fr. SC-172CFT. This likely Unique 1786 South Carolina Uniface Large Format Note measuring 167mm x 115mm is a major Contemporary Counterfeit rarity. Its holder states pieces missing (at upper left and the bottom right margin edge), and backed with early thin archival paper having the glue show-through to the face. “Abernathe FECIT Charleston” is printed vertical along the far left margin design. Falsely Signed by Jn. Huger and Jn. Postell Sr. This is a “Five Year Tax Certificate” that was Secured by mortgages of land. Boldly manuscript “X” canceled across the face with “Counterfeit” handwritten across the central lower portion. An impossible South Carolina fiscal document to acquire as a contemporary counterfeit. Original examples are virtually impossible to locate on this issue. The Friedberg reference states this Ten Pounds denomination as being “Unconfirmed” as original and the 2008 5th edition of Newman only displays a Three Pound note on page 427 which brought $3,450 graded Fine in January 2005. As rough as this note may appear, it is likely the Only Example collectors of South Carolina and Colonial Currency may have the opportunity to acquire. Provenance Ex: F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack's John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XV, October, 2006, Lot 8775.
