Lot 107:
July 6, 1789 South Carolina “City of Charleston” Hemp & Tobacco” Vignette Rare Full Sheet Margined Specimen

July 6, 1789, South Carolina Colonial Currency, City of Charleston, One Shilling Three Pence “Hemp Rope and Tobacco Plant” vignette, “TREASUSY” Spelling Error, likely a Fully Margined Remainder or Printer’s Specimen, PMG graded Choice Very Fine-35.
Fr. SC-197. This is an extremely rare unsigned South Carolina Remainder Note that retains its full outer margin selvage on all four sides. Though there are a few short tears and other minor issues in the wide selvage area, its holder states selvage tears, as shown. We offered only one other similar example with full margins in our July 2001 auction lot 164, PMG graded EF-40 which sold for $2,880. It is likely that this note exists having been kept as a sample printing or used as an early Printer’s Proof or Specimen having heavy inking present on the wide left margin. Certainly a rare specimen being a great opportunity for South Carolina and Colonial currency rarity specialists.
