Revolutionary War Period Royal Navy Flag Officer’s Button

c. 1767-1783 Revolutionary War Period, British Admiral or Flag Officer’s Decorative Gilt Button with “Tudor Rose” Insignia, Troiani BNF.a, 22mm, Choice Extremely Fine.
Troiani BNF.a. This rare British Flag Officer’s gilt button of the Revolutionary War period is in remarkable choice original condition. The gilt on this ornate button remains vibrant and pleasing to the eye. There is only slight fading along one of the edges of the octagonal design, likely where most “buttoned”. The reverse side are actual original remnants of the thread used to secure this button to an uniform. Various grades of Admirals or “Flag” officers wore a flat gilt button similar to this one. This type of button was first used on the non-dress uniforms between 1748 and 1767, then on general purpose dress uniforms between 1767 and 1783 and finally expended to wear on full and non-dress uniforms between 1783 and 1787. This buttons back is made of ivory laced with brass and would have been attached by means of a catgut shank. The design features an indented edge that surrounds a rope twist border which, in turn, supports a raised octagon. Along the edge of the octagon is a stamped border of repeating circle motifs. An excellent clean clearly detailed example for Revolutionary War button specialists.
