Lot 122:
Original Revolutionary War Soldier’s Pewter “USA” Button
c. 1776, American Revolutionary War Continental Army Soldier’s Pewter “USA” Button, Small Size, Original Shank Intact, Very Good. This “USA” button is the exact example that was removed from previously being part of the the framed display in our December 20th, 2025 auction lot #21, which housed the May 23, 1778 dated Henry Knox letter sent from Valley Forge. It measures about 3/4 inch in diameter. The consignor of that item informed us that this button was dug near Valley Forge, which is all the information we have. The rims have outer chipping yet the central “USA” design remains well centered and clear, being well defined. The reverse has its shank completely straight and intact with traces of its original cast and displaying a strong even patina as shown. |
