1780 Horse Purchase Document For George Washington’s Continental Army with SERIAL #1 Lancaster, Pennsylvania

August 13th, 1780-Dated Revolutionary War Period, Unique Serial Number “1”, Partially-Printed Document Signed, “James Bagley - W.M.G.L.”, at Lebanon, Lancaster County, PA., being a “Pennsylvania” Interest Bearing Bond, Anderson listed as PA-2, fully executed for the Purchase of a Horse by the United States Continental Army, Choice Very Fine.
Only One Serial Number 1 Exists. This important Interest Bearing Bond was used for supplying urgently needed horses for George Washington’s Continental Army. This example is in excellent quality being fully executed and signed, bearing the Unique SERIAL Number “1”. It has fully wide and complete margins with the standard indent at left. (Paid then with "Sixty for one in Continental" paper money currency notes due to Inflation.) Recorded as an historic Interest Bearing Certificate, by Anderson in his reference book titled, “The Price of Liberty” there listed as PA-2. Docket on the blank reverse reads, in full: “Lancaster County No. 1 in favour of Geo. Wambler - Paid Sept. 8, 1781 - Philip Greenwald - 25 Pounds”. A historic Interest Bearing Bond official Document measuring 8” x 7.75”, well printed in deep black on clean fully wide-margined laid period paper.

Payment being for, in part: “...one Bay horse 4 yrs old, fourteen hands high for the wagon...”, and appraised in value by “two Freeholders, on Afermation (Affirmation).” Typical numerous ink notations, and endorsements on the blank verso. The right edge indented border’s ornate design has the partial text “(PENNSY)LVANIA”. Impressive eye appeal, being boldly typeset and written in rich brown ink.
