Lot 139:
Circa 1777 Superb “G. WASHINGTON” Portrait Mirror Knob Handsome Transfer in Brown on White Enamel Rarity
c. 1777 General George Washington Portrait Transfer in Brown on White Enamel Mirror Knob, Ornate Oval Brass Surround, image measuring 2.5” tall x 1.5” wide, England, Superb Virtual Mint State. An exceptional George Washington Portrait Mirror Knob, this design type was not available to David Arman when illustrating his major reference book, ANGLO-AMERICAN CERAMICS. His Appendix II on page 241 illustrates several other examples of the rare “Leaders of the American Revolution” Series, yet this “G. WASHINGTON” design is not shown. It is estimated by David Arman that this rare series was produced c. 1777 to 1790. This specimen has the eye appeal of virtually new, there being no wear or detractions to the portrait. The wall screw stem shows that is was in actual use, there being some wood remnants still within the 1” long screw threads. Certainly, this is one of the finest known and it is the very first we have offered in four decades. Bright, clean and gorgeous. |
