Lot 140:
c. 1805 George Washington Engraved Portrait Cover Page Illustrated Sheet Music for "The Battle of Prague" Boston
c. 1800, Copper-Plate Engraved Separate Individual Portrait of George Washington in Uniform typically seen on the Title Page of the Sheet Music for "The Battle of Prague, Favorite Sonate For the Piano Forte with Accompaniments", with "G. Washington President of the United States" below the portrait, Printed & Sold by Graupner No. 6 Franklin St., Boston, “Price 1 Doll.,” Very Fine. This a rarely encountered Illustrated Engraved Portrait of George Washington that is found on the title page of the sheet music for "The Battle of Prague", a popular piece of martial music composed by Franz Kotzwara, which imitated the sounds of battle. The George Washington illustrated title page only. Possibly in this state an early proof impression, with a clear outline of the original copper plate easily seen embossed in the heavy wove period paper. It measures 11-3/4" x 9-1/8" having some wrinkling of the outer margins from a prior framing. The central plate impression is clean and evenly printed. The left outer selvage margin has a .75” strip of tone that is outside of the actual embossed plate’s outline. Text with “Price 1 Doll.” in the text-block below Washington’s portrait. Published in Boston by Graupner, dates from circa 1800 to 1805. This early American printing of "The Battle of Prague" sought to capitalize on the late President's popularity through the use of an engraved portrait by Wetherbee after Joseph Wright. See: Hart 153a, W.S. Baker's "Engraved Portraits of Washington" #82. |
