Lot 146:
c.1800 Scrimshaw Carved Translucent Horn Panel for Oil Lamp Lighting a Lady Liberty Scene with Britain in Chains
c. 1800 Patriot American Scrimshaw Curved Horn Panel is Translucent for an Oil Lamp to cast its light through depicting “Liberty” with an American Eagle with an early American Flag behind, and having Chained a Multi-Headed Hydra and British Lion into submission, 6.25” x 4.75”, Very Fine. This impressive unique American Patriotic scrimshaw hand-carved Horn Panel measures 6.25” x 4.75”, originally formed flattened and curved as part of an oil lamp lit display. It features a finely detailed Allegorical Scene centered upon a female figure of “Liberty”. She stands holding a staff with a Liberty Cap atop, surmounted by a large American Eagle, with an American flag displayed prominently in the background. In her other hand, Liberty grasps a heavy chain connected to the nose of a British Lion; the chain coils dramatically around a Twelve-headed Hydra positioned at the center of the composition. The symbolism possibly the alliance between Liberty overcoming Tyranny and multiple threats. This Horn exhibits a pleasing yellow-gold coloration throughout. While the inked details of the scrimshaw engraving have softened and faded over time, the scene remains clearly visible and readily identifiable. Minor chipping is present along the bottom edge, the panel retains its original gentle curve consistent with its function as a lamps section, with eight pairs of small holes where this panel was previously attached in place. This remarkable early American Patriotic Folk Art displays strong visual impact and overall historic character. |
