EDWARD EVERETT (1794-1865). American politician, pastor, educator, diplomat, and orator, U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, 15th Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, United States Secretary of State, and Harvard University President. Great American Orator best remembered for his dedication at the Gettysburg National Cemetery in 1863, where he spoke for over two hours before President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous two-minute Gettysburg Address. 1860-Dated, “Oration Delivered Before the City Authorities of Boston : On the Fourth of July, 1860” Signed by Edward Everett and inscribed to Representative Nathan Appleton. Choice Extremley Fine, Plus a Choice Very Fine CDV Signed, “Hon. Ed Everett.” Measures about 9.25” x 6”. Original binding and cover, spotting to boards, Slight toning. An exceptional and historically significant 1860 Fourth of July oration booklet, titled “Oration Delivered Before the City Authorities of Boston: On the Fourth of July, 1860.” This important Civil War-era publication is boldly signed by Edward Everett and warmly inscribed to the “Hon. Nathan Appleton,” a distinguished Massachusetts statesman. This booklet retains a solid binding and original covers. The boards show light spotting and slight, even toning consistent with their age. Of special note, a carte de viste of Edward Everett is found within the booklet and is also signed by him. The presence of both the signed inscription and the additional signed photograph greatly enhances the desirability and collector appeal of this remarkable historical piece. He is perhaps best remembered as the principal speaker at the 1863 dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where he delivered a two-hour address immediately preceding President Abraham Lincoln’s immortal Gettysburg Address. |
