August 9th, 1864-Dated Civil War C.S.A., Confederate States Partially-Printed Official Form #19, Completed and Signed by “Holmes Conrad”, being a fully executed Purchase Order for "One Beef Weighing 800 Pounds" for $800 at Winchester”, Very Fine.
The 1st Cavalry Regiment completed its organization at Winchester, Virginia, in July, 1861. This tan wove period paper official form is headed “THE CONFEDERATE STATES,” ISSUED Winchester, Virginia, 1864. Sacrce Form #19 an Invoice paid to Edward Hicks for 800 pounds of Beef at 30 cents a pound, Signed by Holmes Conrad as Capt. A.C.S., C.S.A.. Well written and black typeset on light tan lined period paper with THE CONFEDERATE STATES, with fill margins with just a short internal fold split not seen unless held to a light. Holmes Conrad (1840-1915) was an American politician, lawyer and CSA military officer. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted as a private in Company A, 1st Virginia Cavalry regiment who saw active service throughout the Civil War. The CSA 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment, organized in 1861, was a prominent Confederate cavalry unit known as the "Black Horse Cavalry," serving with distinction under commanders like J.E.B. Stuart and Fitzhugh Lee in major campaigns, including the Seven Days' Battles, Gettysburg, and the Shenandoah Valley, participating in over 200 engagements before cutting through Federal lines at Appomattox and disbanding, with only one member present at the final surrender. Conrad was commissioned a Lieutenant and was appointed Adjutant in August 1862. In 1864 he became a Major and the Assistant Inspector General of Thomas Rosser’s Cavalry Division, serving there until the end of the Civil War. A scarce form in nice condition for display.
The 1st Cavalry Regiment completed its organization at Winchester, Virginia, in July, 1861. Unlike most regiments, the 1st contained twelve companies. The men were from the counties of Frederick, Berkeley, Rockbridge, Clarke, Washington, Augusta, Jefferson, Amelia, Loudoun, Rockingham, and Gloucester. After taking part in the Battle of First Manassas, the unit was brigaded under Generals J.E.B. Stuart, F. Lee, Wickham, and Munford. It participated in more than 200 engagements of various types including the Seven Days' Battles and Stuart's ride around McClellan. The regiment was active in the conflicts at Gainesville, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, The Wilderness, Todd's Tavern, Spotsylvania, Bethesda Church, and Cold Harbor. Later it was involved in Early's operations in the Shenandoah Valley, the defense of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign. In April, 1862, it totalled 437 men, lost eight percent of the 310 engaged at Gettysburg, and had 318 fit for duty in September, 1864.

The cavalry cut through the Federal lines at Appomattox and later disbanded. Only 1 man from this unit were present at the surrender. The field officers were Colonels R. Welby Carter, James H. Drake, William E. Jones, Fitzhugh Lee, William A. Morgan, and James E.B. Stuart; Lieutenant Colonels L. Tiernan Brien and Charles R. Irving; and Major Robert Swan.
