Lot 163:
Choice Uncirculated Medium “AYER'S” SARSAPARILLA
1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp, EP-4a, HB-28, S-13, Reed AS01MD, One Cent, AYER'S SARSAPARILLA, Medium “AYER'S” Plain Frame, Choice Uncirculated. Rated as Rarity-1 (100 or so Known) according to Fred Reed. The Medium AYER’S reverse die of this type broke during use, yet the present example shows its originality as a very early striking from the die being perfect. The mica is exceptionally clear and unbroken, smooth in appearance. The 1861 US Postage issue deep blue Benjamin Franklin 1¢ stamp is exceptionally well centered appearing beautiful with strong eye appeal with some light wrinkles as made. The case is overall perfect, having excellent even chestnut color on both sides having no marks or detractions. One of the finest quality examples of this popular AYER’s Merchant type we have offered, making this a very collectible example for quality minded collectors. As such, it is expected to sell for multiples of the circulated catalog listed value being rare in this excpetional quality. (VF Scott Cat. $450) |
