Lot 170:
Popular "S. Steinfeld" New York City French Cognac Bitters Encased Postage Major Merchant Type Ch. Extremely Fine

1862 Civil War Encased Postage Stamp, EP-27, HB-221, S-165, Reed-ST01, One Cent S. STEINFELD, NY, French Cognac Bitters New York, Choice Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-7 (11 to 15 known) according to Fred Reed. This is a choice quality example of this highly popular and desirable rarity. It is considered to be only “collectable” due to rarity in this denomination, with only about a dozen specimens believed to exist. This example certainly ranks among the finest. The rich blue stamp is perfectly centered, clearly seen through the clear unbroken mica. The case has a medium-chestnut natural coloration, highlighting the sharply detailed reverse legends. This rare major Merchant type is one of the “Keys” towards completing a full Thirty-four Encased Postage Merchant type set. (VF Scott $3,000) Provenance ex: Collection of Robert Bauer.
