Lot 178:
Straight INSURANCE Type North American Life Insurance
1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp, EP-53, HB-190, S-141, Three Cents, NORTH AMERICAN LIFE INSURANCE, New York, with Straight “INSURANCE,” Very Choice Extremely Fine+. Rarity-5 (21 to 30 known) according to Fred Reed. This is a lovely example of this scarcer 1862 produced Civil War Encased Postage Stamp emergency currency from the NORTH AMERICAN LIFE INSURANCE, New York Merchant with Straight “INSURANCE” at center being a major listed variety type. It has extremely sharp details with a lovely even deep chestnut toned case. The reverse side legends are distinct, showing only slight circulation and the central advertising text is sharp. The clean rich red 1861 Civil War US Postage issue George Washington stamp is well centered slightly towards the top with a bold original appearance. The clear unbroken mica displays the stamp with nice eye appeal. Overall, an example worthy of a better quality collection. (EF Friedberg Cat. $750) |
