Lot 194:
Important Ten Cents “F. BUHL AND COMPANY” Rarity-8

1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp, EP-104, HB-70, S-41, Reed-BU10, Ten Cents, F. BUHL AND COMPANY, “Dealers In Hats & Furs Detroit,” Very Fine.
Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 known) according to Fred Reed. A very collectible example of this extremely elusive major Merchant type and denomination. The 1861 George Washington US Postage stamp is very well centered being just a bit to the left and remains quite clean and bold looking in its deep original green color. The mica is clear and unbroken. The case has clear central legends with chestnut color with a deep charcoal surrounding between the reverse case and the rim edge with some mottled mixed reddish tones. One of the better of the few 10¢ Buhl & Company examples we have ever encountered. In our EAHA Auction of December 11, 2004 we offered lot 616, graded Choice EF which sold for $2,760 now over two decades ago. An important opportunity to acquire this major rarity. (EF Friedberg Cat. $2,500)
