Lot 200:
Impressive 10 Cents Schapker & Bussing Evansville, Indiana
1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp, EP-129, HB-214, Scott-158, Reed-SB10, Ten Cents, Schapker & Bussing, Evansville, Indiana, Choice Very Fine+. Rated as Rarity-5 (21 to 30 known), according to Fred Reed. A pleasing example having no defects or detractions other than from light normal circulation. The 1861 US Postage George Washington stamp is very well centered and bold green. The mica is clear and unbroken with normal internal laminations in the mineral and has light signs of circulation. The case is very smooth and defect free with a nice golden-chestnut overall color with nice sharp detail to the legends only showing just light wear from actual use as money in circulation. (EF Friedberg Cat. $950) Schapker & Bussing (often listed as Schapker, Bussing & Co.) was a prominent 19th-century dry goods, millinery, and fancy goods business located in Evansville, Indiana. Archival advertisements from the mid-to-late 1800s show the company was a significant player in Evansville's retail and wholesale scene. During the American Civil War, when government coinage was scarce, Schapker & Bussing issued Civil War tokens. These were private merchant tokens used as currency and are now valued by numismatists. |
