April 19, 1798-Dated, Autograph Document Signed, “John Claflin” the father of the Civil War Era Advertising Merchant Encased Postage Stamp Encasement “Arthur M. Claflin” of Hopkinton, Mass., selling Land in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Choice Very Fine. Original Legal Land Document is dated April 19, 1798, where John Claflin of Holliston, (MA) has sold to Samuel Goddard (a saddle maker from Franklin, MA), a piece of land in Hopkinton, (MA). That land borders the road from the Meeting House in Hopkinton, to the Meeting House in Westborough. There is also some mention of land transferred from the Harvard College Trustees! This legal size document measures 14” high x 8” wide and is witness Signed; Jeremy Stimson, Benjamin Pond, John Claflin, and John Stone, as Registrar. There are some folds and minor paper faults, otherwise this document is well written in dark ink, easily readable and in very good shape. This John Claflin is the father of the John Claflin exceedingly rare 1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp Advertising Merchant for the encasement made for “Claflin & Company” of Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
