1862 Abraham Lincoln Indian Peace Medal, Including the First Medal with a Baseball Game Being Played Depicted, Struck in Bronze, Second Size, 62.8 mm, Julian IP-39, Prucha-51, Engraved by Ellis and Wilson, NGC graded MS-63 Brown. 62.8 mm. 1795.9 grains. A wonderful, sharply detailed example of this historic and highly popular Abraham Lincoln Indian Peace Medal in its very scarce medium size. The Obverse design: Capped bust of Lincoln facing right, his name and title around, with 1862 date below. The Reverse design: Two Native American Indian Warriors Scalping scene, with a quiver, bow, tomahawk, and Native American Indian woman’s bust below, around central engraved vignette of a Native American plowing his fields, with children Playing Baseball shown in the background, with the sculptors signature on the reverse below the field. This important Abraham Lincoln American medal also includes the very First Depiction of a Baseball Game being played shown in metallic form. A beautiful example of this popular type, having a rich reddish-mahogany even natural color, satiny surfaces and great details. A medal avidly sought after for both its connection to President Abraham Lincoln (and its fine portrait by Salathiel Ellis), and its historic early depiction of Baseball being played on its reverse.
