Lot 212:
A Slave Named “George Washington” Receives His Pay & Subsistence Serving as Officer's Servant on a U.S. Gunboat

February 6, 1864-Dated Civil War Period, Partly-Printed Document, an Army Pay Voucher issued to a Union Officer on the US Army Gunboat “Flora Temple” Specifying Pay & Subsistence and Clothes for his Private Servant, a former Slave named "George Washington", Very Good.
This Partially-Printed Official Union Payment Voucher was issued to 2nd Lt. William H. Bleadenheiser of the 3rd PA Artillery, on detached duty Commanding the U.S. Army Gunboat "Flora Temple". He states that the pay due to him is for wages and subsistence for the month of January, 1864, as well as special pay and subsistence for his Private Servant named, "George Washington". Washington is described as being 5'4" tall, having dark hair, dark eyes, and a dark complexion - being a Contraband Slave now serving as an officer's private servant on board the Gunboat. The document is folded, 1 page, measuring 4.75” x 8.5” with the exterior having many notations, some fold splits, tape reinforced on the back with scattered ink stains and obvious wear from circulation and circumstances.

The "Flora Temple" was an Army operated Gunboat which did reconnaissance and troop support duties in Virginia's estuaries, including on the Nansemond River and on Chuckatuck Creek. In January, 1864, the "Flora Temple" was ambushed by Confederate troops while turning in Chuckatuck Creek; the pilot and wheelsman were killed and several crewmen were wounded. An unusual Black History related Union military document.
