(c. 1793-1795) Kentucky Token, Lettered Edge “PAYABLE AT BEDWORTH NUNEATON OR HINKLEY”, W-8815, Breen-1159, Rarity-9 (Unique), Struck in Copper, PCGS graded About Uncirculated-58. 146.5 grains. Rarity-9 (Unique). A remarkable numismatic Unique Rarity, Ex: Norweb Sydney F. Martin Collection. An incredible rarity for Kentucky token and rare Colonial Coin rare variety specialists. This being the Only Known Example with the Edge Lettering that reads: “PAYABLE AT BEDWORTH NUNEATON OR HINKLEY”. This Variety was known to Crosby, as it was listed in his classic reference: “The Early Coins of America in 1875”. There was only One Example, described having this Unique Edge Lettering he located, originally discovered being listed in Strobridge's December 1871 Auction Sale of the “Dr. Charles Clay Collection” Lot 298. To this very day, No Other Example has been Reported. It seems clear that this 1871 “Dr. Charles Clay” specimen is the exact coin offered here. An attractive very sharply struck, virtually Mint State coin with slightly lustrous surfaces and even copper-brown natural color.
