WILLIAM MCKINLEY (1843-1901). 25th President of the United States (1897-1901). President McKinley was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in September of 1901 in Buffalo, and was succeeded by his Vice President, Theodore Roosevelt. May 24, 1898-Dated Spanish-American War Period, Partially-Printed Ornate Vellum Document Signed, “William McKinley” as President, measuring 19.25” x 15.75”, Extremely Fine. This Military Commission Appointing Charles M. Truitt as Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers with the rank of Captain. Countersigned by Secretary of War, Russell A. Alger. Standard large engravings of an American Heraldic Eagle at top and with a splay of military paraphernalia at bottom. Its blue War Department Seal is intact at lower left. The docket in the upper left corner has faded and there is some minor edge toning; otherwise in excellent condition. President McKinley signs with his full name written in rich dark brown ink. A fine display item. |
