69th New York Infantry “Irish Brigade” Colonel Robert Nugent’s 1863 Autograph Letter Signed to New York Governor Horatio Seymour Regarding Bounty Payments

ROBERT NUGENT (1824-1901). Irish-born Colonel of the 69th NY Infantry, the "Fighting 69th", in the famed Irish Brigade. He led the 69th NY in the Seven Days battles and was shot in the stomach at the Battle of Fredericksburg in Dec. 1862, eventually forcing him to resign his command. Nugent received the first note from General Grant on April 7th, 1865 for delivery to the Confederate picket lines, requesting General Robert E. Lee to Surrender.
December 3rd, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Autograph Letter Signed, “Robert Nugent

Col. 69th N.Y.V.” as Colonel of the 69th New York Infantry, written shortly after resuming command of the Regiment, 1 page, measuring 8” x 10”, New York City, Choice Extremely Fine. This historic letter is nicely written in rich brown ink on white wove period paper with his office printed header. It is sent to New York Governor Horatio Seymour, advising him of arrangements made for paying Bounties to Volunteers. This Letter reads, in full:

"To His Excellency / Horatio Seymour / Governor of the State of New York, -- Sir:

I am instructed by Brig. Genl. Wm. Hays, A.A.P.M.G. to inform you in reply to your communication of the 2nd inst., that all arrangements have been perfected for paying the bounties offered by the General Government to volunteers.

There are no blanks for recruiting in the possession of recruiting agents, but all necessary forms, instructions, &c., are in the hands of the Provost Marshals of the several Districts under Genl. Hays' supervision, to whom recruiting agents or persons presenting recruits can apply. --- Very respectfully your obt. Servt. -- (Signed) Robert Nugent

ROBERT NUGENT (1824-1901) was appointed Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General for the Southern District of New York, which included New York City, commanding troops during the New York City Draft Riots in July, 1863 during which time his house was burned and looted by rioters.

He resumed command of the famous "Fighting 69th", the famed Irish Brigade Union 69th New York in December, 1863, commanding the Regiment at the Battle of Spotsylvania and during the Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns. Appointed Brevet Brigadier General, March 13, 1865. Nugent emained in the Regular Army for 20 years, and fought in the Indian Wars.
