Lot 46:
Capt Johnathan Bullus Signed and 1763-Dated Powder Horn

1763-Dated French and Indian War Period, American Colonial Engraved Powder Horn Inscribed with the Name “Capt Johnathan Bullus” on the Cap and “1763” on the wooden spout, Very Fine.
This Colonial era Engraved Powder Horn measures about 11” long. It has a turned spout stopper fully intact and its carved wooden end cap is complete. There is a rich original natural deep patina to the wood portions and the horn has pleasing rich yellowing tone. There are a number of period designs decorating the horn surfaces near the cap end. The spout stopper has the year 1763 hand-carved on one side and both the cap and spout have their original rounded and threaded plugs intact. The end cap has “Capt. Jonathan Bullus” inscribed into the wood which is topped horse hair. Two copper rings hold in place what appears to be its original catgut stringer. The consignor stated that Captain Bullus was known to George Washington. Further research is strongly recommended, as we could not locate a specific connection to Washington timely for the cataloging of this sale. Overall, whole and complete with an interesting nonstandard design and having honest wear.
