1780 JOHN CHESTER Signed Connecticut Currency Note
JOHN CHESTER (1749-1809). Revolutionary War Patriot, Hero at the Battle of Bunker Hill depicted in Gilbert Stuart’s historic painting “The Death of General Warren” shown holding the dying General Joseph Warren while trying to protect him from the advancing British, Chester Crossed the Delaware with General George Washington at Trenton as a Continental Army Soldier from Connecticut. June 1, 1780 Revolutionary War Period, Connecticut Colonial Currency 10 Shilling Note Signed, “J(OHN) CHESTER” as an official signer authenticating the Currency, Hole punch cancel, Gem Crisp Uncirculated. Fr. CT-230. This exceptional quality note has sharp black printer text on bright fresh white laid period paper. John Chester’s signature is written in vivid red ink perfectly centered in the bottom signature block. There is a round 1” diameter cancel above, this note has perfect centering within full margins both face and back providing excellent eye appeal. John Chester was a Connecticut militia officer and Member of the Connecticut General Assembly before the Revolutionary War. He saw action with Connecticut troops, actively participated in the fighting at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Crossing the Delaware December 25th, 1776 with General Washington to fight in the Battle of Trenton the following day. John Chester went on to serve as Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives and later he would hold various public offices, and also was an Original Member of the Society of the Cincinnati from Connecticut. |
