1773 Georgia Twenty Shillings Red and Black Note Fully Signed and Issued PMG Certified Choice Extremely Fine-45
1773 Act, Georgia, Twenty Shillings, Large Format Certificate, Fully Signed and Issued Printed in Red and Black, PMG graded Choice Extremely Fine-45. Fr. GA-48. A rare large format size issue with this “single sole denomination” of Twenty Shillings representing the entire issue. There are no other denominations. This 1773 Act of issued certificates was short lived, being received for taxes due or exchangeable, only until September 29, 1776 deadline back to the treasury, afterwards they were made invalid. Only a small number of these notes were authorized to be issued and this example is both fully issued and clearly signed carrying all seven choice signatures. The seven signatures appear well written and legible in brown ink, including; N(oble) Jones (boldly embellished vertical signature) and the signature of his son, N(oble) W(imberly) Jones (seen at the bottom of the left row of signatures, Noble would later go on to serve as a Delegate from Georgia to the Continental Congress in 1781-1782), James E. Powell, William Young, Joseph Clay, Thomas Shruder and Sam(uel) Farley complete the seven signatories. This attractive large format Red and Black printed notes PCGS Choice EF-45 holder notes a split which measures about .75” at the top and bottom of the vertical centerfold. The blank reverse side is very clean with one small notation “old £12:0-0” comparing to the old issue of currency. A quite similar quality note is illustrated in the current (2008) 5th Edition of Newman, page 137 for this colorful Georgia currency issue. The only Newman value provides the sale price of an Unissued and Unsigned “RM” (Remainder), graded (raw) Very Fine, which sold in the May 2004 Ford auction at $2,990. The last example offered by EAHA was July 24, 2021, Lot 15, fully signed and issued graded PCGS VF-35 which sold for $4,200. This current colorful PCGS graded Choice EF-45 note should certainly attract strong collector interest. |
