Lot 59:
Rare Georgia June 8th, 1777 Five Dollars with Black “in” Type & Being an Issue Payable in CONTINENTAL Currency
June 8th, 1777, Georgia, Five Dollars, Rattlesnake vignette, Rare Type with Black “in”, this Bearer Issue being Payable in CONTINENTAL Currency, Very Fine. Fr. GA-107b. This rare uniface Black “in” printed Revolutionary War issue note is the upper right corner top sheet printed note having top and right jumbo sheet margins. It has a natural paper crease as made at upper right, with some overall even circulation showing a clear overall appearance. Very low serial “No. 25” whereas the Newman plate example is serial “No. 61”. Printed in Red and Black with a light blue Rattlesnake vignette seal at lower right. The Black “in” type is vastly rarer than the common Red “in”, both Friedberg and Newman listing the value at about double for Black, but still not fully reflecting its significantly higher rarity. Fully signed and issued by; Joseph Wood, Edward Langworthy, Richard Wylly, William O’Bryen and Nehemiah Wade. This rare major type is certainly lacking in most all Georgia and Colonial Currency collections. |
