June 22, 1775 New York, City of Albany Forty Shillings Personal Promissary Note of Only £500 Total Value Issued
June 22, 1775, New York, City of Albany Colonial Currency, Forty Shillings, Personal Promissary Note of the Revolutionary War Committee of Correspondence, Fr. NY-171.5, PMG graded Very Fine-25. Fr. NY-171.5 Colonial notes emitted for this entire extremely rare issue are All listed as “VERY RARE” in the Friedberg Paper Money reference, not priced there due rarity. Only a mere £500 in total value of these personal Promissory Notes of the Committee of Correspondence of the City and County of Albany that was authorized on June 22, 1775. This Uniface note appears finer in quality than the 2008 5th edition Newman reference plate illustration shown on page 285. In 2008, Newman provides an aggressive value of $4,500 in Fine, being the highest quality listed, whereas this note is PMG graded Very Fine-25. The holder states repaired, whereas both the Newman Plate note and this current note show general circulation and expert conservation to a centerfold split, each note also having the same three signers; Samuel Stringer (in light red), Jacob Lansing and Jacob C. Ten Eyck are written in rich brown ink. The typeset sharply printed text appears bold black, the text easily readable. This note compares finer than the 2008 5th Edition Newman plate note illustrated on page 285. Overall, an extreme rarity with less than ten examples known and lacking in most New York and Colonial Currency paper money collections. Provenance Ex: Ford-Boyd collections, October 2006, lot 8316.
