March 10th, 1769 “Relief and Employment of the Poor in Philadelphia” Pennslyvania Issue Eighteen Pence Note
March 10th, 1769, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia "Bettering House Money" Issue, Eighteen Pence, Plate C, Fine to Very Fine. Fr. PA-139. The March 10, 1769 Pennsylvania colonial currency issue was specifically authorized for the "Relief and Employment of the Poor in the City of Philadelphia". These notes are historically significant as they represent one of the few colonial-era paper money emissions dedicated to a social cause rather than military expenses or general treasury loans. Known as "Bettering House Money," the funds were intended to support Philadelphia's Almshouse (or "Bettering House") following the Act of February 18, 1769. Signed by: Thomas Say, James Penrose and Luke Morris. This note is well centered within all four margins being evenly toned, the blank reverse is perfectly clean without detraction. |
