1818-Dated, ENOCH WOOD PEARLWARE BUST OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, Extremely Rare Type Dated “1818” located on its Maker’s Circular Identifier Plaque located on the back, a Cherub/Putto holding a starred Banner Legend shown atop an American Eagle with two arrows in its talons being part of the ceramic design, English, Extremely Fine.
This impressive design type measures 8.5” high (21.6 cm.) and is listed and displayed in the 1998 reference “ANGLO-AMERICAN CERAMICS - Part 1” by David and Linda Arman, shown imaged on page 232, listed as AL.12 at top right. There is raised medallion circular plaque on the reverse side, reading: “WASHINGTON / Born --- 1732 Died --- 1799 / Enoch Wood, Sculptor / 1818.” and molded number “297”, with a relief below with cherub/putto riding on the back of an American Eagle, brandishing a starred ribbon, the colors for Washington are modeled in an ochre vest and wearing matte deep blue jacket, on a black socle base. Similar examples are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Winterthur. This is a clean bold example with no detractions appears excellent for display.
