GEN. GILBERT MOTTIER LAFAYETTE Memorial Silk Ribbon by the ‘TAILORS OF PHILADELPHIA” Ext Rarity
July 21, 1834-Dated, “GEN. GILBERT MOTTIER LAFAYETTE” Portrait, Memorial Printed Silk Ribbon, presented by the “TAILORS OF PHILADELPHIA” black on white silk, Display Framed, Very Fine. A very rare Memorial Tribute by the “TAILORS OF PHILADELPHIA”, Printed Silk Ribbon. It is significantly larger than the standard Silk Ribbons seen as it measures 9.25” tall x 2.5” wide (by sight) having scalloped ornate outer borders and a deeply printed central vignette displaying heavy horizontal Mourning borders separating the text blocks with a central American Eagle with a banner in its beak reading: “A GRATEFUL NATION / MOURNFUL TRIBUTE”. Below is a memorial with American and French Flags at either side of an oval Portrait of Lafayette facing left. The bottom tribute reads, in full: “GEN. GILBERT MOTTIER LAFAYETTE, Born In Auvergne, Sept. 6th 1757. / Died, May 20th 1834 / Aged 75 Years 8 Months, And 14 Days, / Funeral Obsequies / Performed To His Memory, July 21, 1834. --- PHILADELPHIA. ---” Display matted and framed measuring fully to 16” x 8.5” in a decorative gold-gilt trimmed wood frame with a few scattered specks and light wear.
