December 1st, 1863-Patent Dated Civil War Period, Rare Hand-Painted and Hand-Crafted “Morse Code” Wooden Operator Training Device, Fine.
This is the wooden training platform base that measures 3” wide x 13.5” long x 1.5” high. It has its original forest green paint with added red pinstripes. An oval nicely embossed clear stamping on one side reads, “PATENTED 1863 DECEMBER 1ST” in an oval measuring about 2” long attesting to its being created during the American Civil War. This important training device is of a simple design, having a separate brown painted upper wooden paddle measuring 15.25” long, held in place by a white ceramic resistor, as shown. It lacks the central spring mechanism near center which would have supplied the “tapping” sensation with this device for the operator’s future use on the real mechanism. This training device has seen actual wear from use and likely only survives having been placed aside lacking its spring. This rare patented Morse Code training device for new operators belongs in a special display.
Telegraphs are simple communication devices using a switch operated at one station to control a electromagnet at a separate telegraph station. The electromagnet then will pull down a piece of steel for a short time or a longer time (dot or dash). It was extensively used in the U.S. Civil War for military communications, and as a major communication device from the early 1850s until the mid-1900s.

First used in 1844 by inventor Samuel F.B. Morse to send a message between Baltimore and Washington, DC, in the following years the device saw a dramatic expansive change in the field of communication. This electronic text-message system used electrical signals to pass messages in what became known as Morse Code. Suddenly, cities that were hundreds of miles apart could communicate almost instantly. News traveled faster than ever before and historic events such as battlefield reports became nearly instantaneous.
