Lot 147:
Joseph L. Bates “FANCY GOODS” Two Words Rarity-4
1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp, EP-6, HB-50, S-26a, Reed-BA01F/G. One Cent, Joseph L. Bates, FANCY GOODS (Two Words), Plain Frame, Extremely Fine. Rated as Rarity-4 (31 to 40 known) according to Fred Reed. The blue Ben Franklin stamp is well centered, having some wrinkles as made and small surface laminations craze near Franklin’s neck and chest in the mica, not on the stamp. The case shows extremely fine sharpness of the legends details with natural deep chestnut-brown color on the reverse. A pleasing example of this scarcer Rarity-4 Merchant type. (VF Scott Cat. $600) [Civil War, 19th Century America, American Numismatics] [Encased Postage, Benjamin Franklin, Merchant Tokens] [Currency, Postage Stamps, Numismatics, Exonumia] |
