Lot 160:
Scarce “Ribbed” Frame 5¢ HUNT & NASH “Irving House”

1862 Civil War Encased Postage Stamp Emergency Currency, EP-82, HB-152, S-108a, Five Cents, HUNT & NASH, "Irving House," New York, RIBBED Frame, Choice Extremely Fine.
Rated a Rarity-4 (31 to 40 known) according to Fred Reed. This choice example is of the always popular “Ribbed Frame” major Type. The deep rich brown 5¢ Thomas Jefferson 1861 Civil War Postage issue stamp is very well centered and quite vivid. The case is a natural chestnut-brown in color with a bit lighter tone to the reverse with its sharp clear legends. The individual ribbing to the face side appears sharp. Although not perfect, this example shows light actual use in circulation with a faint shallow bump at reverse bottom left under Hunt. (VF Scott Cat. $900) Provenance ex: Collection of Robert Bauer.
