Lot 161:
Five Cents KIRKPATRICK & GAULT Choice Very Fine
1862 Civil War Era Encased Postage Stamp Emergency Currency, EP-83, HB-162, S-115, Reed KG05, Five Cents, KIRKPATRICK & GAULT, Plain Frame, Choice Very Fine. Rarity-3 (41 to 50 known) according to Fred Reed. A nice example of this popular major Merchant type, somewhat elusive to acquire. The mica is clear with one tiny surface craze from the rim edge at 1:00 to the back of Jefferson’s head, displaying the Five Cents 1861 Civil War US Postage issue Thomas Jefferson deep brown stamp which is near perfectly centered and bold in appearance. The case has a natural golden-chestnut color on the reverse with nice underlying luster. The front moon rims has some tone to the inner edges and the right side moon is slightly pressed from circulation. Otherwise, there are no detractions to the sharply detailed legends. (VF Scott Cat. $700) [Civil War, 19th Century America, American Numismatics] [Encased Postage, Thomas Jefferson, Merchant Tokens] [Currency, Postage Stamps, Numismatics, Exonumia] |
