John Tyler (1790-1862). 10th President of the United States serving from 1841 to 1845, after briefly holding office as the 10th Vice President in 1841. When the American Civil War began in 1861, Tyler at first supported the Peace Conference, but when it failed sided with the Confederacy; Presided over the opening of the Virginia Secession Convention and served as a member of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States. Tyler subsequently won election to the Confederate House of Representatives but died before it assembled.
Nov. 22, 1860-Dated, Rare Pre-Presided over the opening of the Virginia Secession Convention and Civil War Document Signed, measuring 4.25" x 4.5" being a Manuscript Receipt written by Tyler's hand, at Sherwood Forest, Framed, Signed, "John Tyler." This attractive presentation combines an Engraved Portrait of President Tyler after the original painting by famous American portrait artist Alonzo Chappel, the print measuring 7.5" x 5.5" with Tyler's autograph note signed below, reading: "Sherwood Forest, Nov. 22, 1860. / Rec'd by & truly of, John Tyler," with his flourish below, and addressed to "Mr. S.S. Brady." Both elements are handsomely professionally double-matted, the note tipped to a backing card and presented in a decorative gilt beaded-wood frame measuring overall 23.0" x 13.0" ready to hang for immediate display. The engraved portrait presents with good clarity and contrast, while the autograph note shows the confident, flowing signature characteristic of Tyler's hand, all displayed under special UV Plexiglas. Sherwood Forest Plantation was the home of the 10th U.S. President John Tyler from 1842 until his death in 1862. Sherwood Forest Plantation has been the continuous residence of the Tyler family since the President purchased it in 1842. Known to be the longest frame house in America, it is over 300 feet long.
