June 22, 1775 New York Colonial Currency, City of Albany, Very Rare Twenty Shillings Revolutionary War Municipal Currency Issue, PCGS Banknote graded Very Fine-20. Fr. NY-171.4. An extremely rare official City of Albany, New York Revolutionary War municipal currency issue. (PMG has graded no Fr. NY-171.4, Twenty Shillings notes to date.) A Uniface typeset note printed on laid period paper in a wide rectangular format measuring about 4.5” x 2.5” (111mm by 65mm). the left margin end has bold flourishes with ornamental borders on the other three sides. Two signatures; Jacob Lansing, Jr., Jacob C. Ten Eyck are both easy to read being well penned in brown ink. The Boyd collection contained a complete set of all five denominations of which this is his 20s example. His ten shilling note sold in Ford Part XV nearly two decades ago for $4,312 and the 2008 5th Edition of Newman values this not in Fine at $4,500. This current VF-20 graded note has PCGS Banknote details comment repairs (which are not visibly evident). The typeset printing of this note is rich black. This 20s denomination note should see spirited bidding being perhaps one of if not the finest example available. This City of Albany series was not represented in DuPont, the foremost collection of Colonial private and municipal notes ever formed. Many of his private issue notes that were plated in Newman are still Unique. Listed in the current Friedberg as “VERY RARE” and in the 2008 5th Edition of Newman at $4,500 in Fine with no higher grades listed due to rarity. This note is equal or better in quality to the illustrated Newman plate note on page 285. Provenance: F.C.C. Boyd Estate; John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XV, October, 2006, Lot 8315. [American Revolution, Revolutionary War, New York] [Municipal Currency, Albany New York, War Finance] [Currency, Colonial Currency, Numismatics, Exonumia] |
