The 26th British Regiment of Foot were known as the "Cameronians" and was a Scottish infantry regiment whose Revolutionary War service was brief, rough, and largely spent as prisoners of war. The regiment embarked for the North American colonies in 1767 for routine garrison duty, and by the outbreak of fighting in 1775 was stationed in the Province of Quebec, sharing frontier-post duty with the 7th Royal Fusiliers. It was in Quebec/Montreal that it experienced its defining moments of the war. Between them the two regiments mustered only around 700 men, thinly scattered across posts. May 10, 1775, 36 soldiers and two officers of the 26th, garrisoning Fort Ticonderoga under Captain Delaplace, were captured in a surprise dawn raid by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold's Green Mountain Boys, taken without a fight. The next day, a second detachment was taken without incident at Fort Crown Point, and the surrender of its main body at the siege of Fort Saint-Jean that November.
