Impressive and Well Detailed Revolutionary War Era “Rattlesnake and 13-Stars” Button with its Full Shank

c. 1775 Revolutionary War Era, Historical American Political Button, Small Cuff Size, Cast-Brass, “Rattlesnake and 13-Stars” Design, 16.5mm, Troiani AUS.i, with Full Shank, Choice Very Fine.
16.5mm. This major design type made in cast-brass which nicely displays a Patriotic American “Rattlesnake” with its Tail in Mouth, encircling 13-Stars (representing the 13 Colonies), the thirteen raised Six-pointed Stars encircled by a Rattlesnake holding it's tail surrounding a stippled field. This button can be found in Don Troiani’s reference book “Insignia of Independence” on page 259, illustrated as AUS.i. A strong straight shank is rare being still fully intact, even in color and undamaged having excellent eye appeal. As the American colonies came to identify more with their own communities and the concept of liberty, rather than as vassals of the British empire, icons that were unique to the Americas became increasingly popular. This historic American Patriot design type is highly sought after by Revolutionary War, Political and American Button collectors alike. A superior quality example exhibiting nice eye appeal for display.

[American Revolution, Revolutionary War, Colonial America] [Rattlesnake Symbolism, Patriotic Iconography, Thirteen Colonies] [Uniforms and Equipage, Buttons, Militaria]
