BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Staffordshire Figure Identified as “WASHINGTON” on its Base Rare Large Size 14.5” Tall

c. 1876 Centennial, Benjamin Franklin Victorian Staffordshire Figure, Titled (George) “Washington” in Hand-Painted Gold Script on the Base, Large 14.5” tall, Arman AI.21, England, Extremely Fine.
This colorful Benjamin Franklin Staffordshire figure which has a handsome appearance for display. This scarce Staffordshire Figure was made for export to America, measuring about 14.5” tall including its base. Obviously, it is made in the image of Benjamin Franklin, yet is erroneously titled: “Washington” Hand-painted in light Gold Script on its white base. Here, “Washington” is depicted with his tricorner hat held under his left arm, and is holding a document in his right hand. He is shown wearing a colorful waistcoat and britches with period black shoes. This example is similar to the “Franklin” depiction, having rosy cheeks red lips and black facial features, to Arman AI.21 illustrated on page 233 of ANGLO-AMERICAN CERAMICS, Part 1, by David and Linda Arman, published 1998. An impressive example in lovely overall condition for display.
