Lot 119:
Early Benjamin Franklin Nini Style Wedgewood Jasperware
Benjamin Franklin Wedgwood Jasperware wearing his Nini style Beaver Fur Hat marked “WEDGWOOD” reverse center and with a rare "Dr. Franklyn" is lightly engraved into the jasper above the maker’s mark, Small “J” below on reverse, Framed, Extremely Fine. This early Benjamin Franklin Wedgwood Jasperware Bust Portrait in the the mold/relief Nini-Franklin medallion style displayed in the crispness of the fur cap, drapery, and truncation details. It is housed in a very ornate oval gilt wooden frame the top edge decoration has a fine crack otherwise just light wear, overall having choice eye appeal. "Dr. Franklyn" is lightly engraved into the jasper which lines up with the documented Wedgwood practice of labeling portrait subjects with identifying names, either impressed on the front or impressed or engraved/scratched on the back. So a hand-incised name when it's separate from the maker's mark itself is consistent with how Wedgwood sometimes finished these pieces, especially on smaller runs or individually hand-completed examples. The spelling "Franklyn" rather than "Franklin" is also not itself alarming as the spelling variants of his name (Franklyn/Franklin) show up in period documents and correspondence, and some rarer hand-engraved text is more prone to idiosyncratic spelling than a mass-produced mold. The "J" mark on the reverse matches the well-known practice of individual decorators/potters leaving a single-letter mark so their output could be tallied and they could be paid. This example is clean and sharply detailed with some faded old museum style numbers in blue at the upper reverse. An impressive rare example housed in an ornate period style gold-gilt painted wood frame as shown, excellent for display. |
