Lot 134:
(1789) Presidential Button: LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT
(1789) George Washington Presidential Inaugural Button, LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT, Brass, Cuff Button, 14.9 mm, with Central Wreath, Original Shank, Cobb-13, DeWitt-GW 1789-25, Baker-1020, Choice Extremely Fine+. An exceptional high quality example of this small and very rare George Washington Presidential Inaugural Button with the original shank both firmly intact and straight on the smooth hard reverse. Both the reverse and obverse have natural toned even brown-brass color and excellent hard smooth surfaces as shown. Such outstanding sharp eye appeal is rare. Noted collector Cobb knew of just five examples existent back in 1968, and while a few additional are known, most all in lesser quality, this major design type remains rare, especially in this quality. One of the very finest and most natural original examples we have encountered over the past half century, likely not improvable and worthy of strong consideration. |
