Lot 171:
1863 Civil War Original Stereoview Photograph Titled “Admiral Dahlgren and Staff on the ‘Pawnee” Framed
1865-Dated Civil War Era, (1863) Stereoview Photograph titled, “Admiral Dahlgren and Staff on the ‘Pawnee,” Framed, Choice Very Fine. This refers to a well-known Civil War-era photograph held by the Library of Congress: "Admiral Dahlgren and his staff on U.S.S. Pawnee" (also catalogued as "Charleston Harbor, S.C. Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren and staff aboard U.S.S. Pawnee"). USS Pawnee was a Union Navy Steam Sloop-of-War that served in the blockade and operations along the South Carolina/Georgia coast, and it served as Admiral Dahlgren's flagship at various points during the Charleston campaign. This historic U.S. Union Navy Civil War Stereoview Photograph Card is a handsome study of his nine Officer Staff taken aboard the USS “Pawnee”, measuring 4” x 7”, housed in a professional modern decorative wood framed to fully 6.75” x 9.75” and shown under special UV Plexiglas. The reverse side of card has full description of this view (as known to us), yet currently sealed from view when framed. However, a nice color Xerox reproduction of the reverse side of this card and its text is laid onto the outside of the frame’s reverse to view. No. 3413 of a Series, “1861 Photographic War History. 1865”, Published by “The War Photograph & Exhibition Company, Hartford, CT. 1865.” A scarce, clean image and a great Civil War Naval photograph. Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren (1809-1870) headed the U.S. Navy's ordnance department during the Civil War and is best known for designing the Dahlgren gun, a widely used naval cannon. He headed the Union Navy's ordnance department during the war and designed several different kinds of naval guns. In 1863 he took command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, which put him in the waters off Charleston, South Carolina for much of the war's final years. |
