c. 1880 Original Vintage Photograph, noted at bottom right within the image, "American Jockey Club / Jerome Park. N.Y.", a great photo at this most elegant racetrack, Framed, Fine.
Opened in 1866, Jerome Park was considered the most elegant racetrack of its time, attracting New York's upper class and featuring amenities like a grand clubhouse, ballroom, and dining room. The track hosted the inaugural Belmont Stakes in 1867. A fabulous classic vintage Photograph, in New York, titled, "American Jockey Club / Jerome Park. N.Y." housed under glass in its original black painted wood frame. The photo measures a large 12.75” x 16.75” and is fully framed to 17.5” x 22”. Some light even tone and the mat has some water staining at its bottom, which is easy to replace or remove the photo from its frame entirely. Not examined outside of frame. Provenance: From a private Richmond, VA collection. A most unusual and enjoyable scene, being the only example we have offered.
Jerome Park was a prominent New York racetrack that hosted the first Belmont Stakes in 1867 and was operated by the original American Jockey Club. It has no connection to the modern, national American Jockey Club, which was founded later. The old racetrack was located in what is now the Bronx and was converted into a NY City reservoir in 1906.

The racetrack was situated in the Fordham section of what is now the Bronx, on the Bathgate estate. The land is now home to the Jerome Park Reservoir. The area is still served by Jerome Avenue, which was originally a boulevard named for Leonard Jerome.

The track was founded by stock speculator Leonard W. Jerome, who was also the maternal grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill. Along with August Belmont Sr., Jerome helped establish the original American Jockey Club, which ran the facility.

The track's fortunes faded in the late 19th century as horse racing declined in popularity and bookmaking became controversial. The original Jockey Club banned betting, which was the final blow to the track's profitability. Jerome Park closed in 1894 and the city of New York acquired the land to build the reservoir.
