Lot 208:
1934 California Anti-Prohibition Electoral Poster “Sane, Enforceable Liquor Regulation and Bone-Dry Local Option”

November 6th, 1934-Dated Anti-Prohibition Political Poster was printed by the Northern California Business Council advocating for the passage of Proposition 2 and against Proposition 13 on the 1934 ballot, calling the former “Sane, Enforceable Liquor Regulation” and the latter the “‘Bone-Dry’ Local Option - Return of Prohibition”, Fine.
The bold two-color Red & Black printed Political Poster measures 11” x 14” on a heavy card stock with the printing maker’s mark intact at bottom. Its design is very striking, with both “Vote” words in bright red and eye-catching black bands emphasizing the Proposition numbers and the accompanying “YES” or “NO” in capital letters. The Northern California Business Council put out this poster with the hope of swaying public opinion on Propositions 2 and 13 on the 1934 California Ballot. Proposition 2, which prohibited the sale of alcohol except beer at saloons and barrooms, allowed the sale and consumption of alcohol at certain places and established licenses to sell alcohol, passed with a 64% majority, while Proposition 13, which would have allowed voters of a city or county to submit an initiative regarding the prohibition of beverages with more than 0.5% alcohol, only received 27% support at the ballot box and failed to pass into law. Light age tone and minimal surface wear, worthy of display.
