The accompanying sheet music cover, printed for "The Stars and Stripes Forever! March, By John Philip Sousa" and bearing a portrait of Sousa in his naval band uniform, was issued by the Theodore Presser Co. under its "John Church Division" imprint having a minor light round waterstain at lower left. The cover dates to 1930 or later, since Presser did not acquire Sousa's original publisher, the John Church Company, until that year, five years after the autograph was signed and dated. Ready to hang on display. "The Stars and Stripes Forever" was composed by Sousa in 1896 and remains the best-known march in American history, a piece Sousa himself regarded as his finest work and which Congress designated the official National March of the United States in 1987. Sousa was regularly asked by admirers to inscribe a few bars of its melody alongside his signature, making surviving musical quotations from his most famous composition among the most desirable examples of his autograph. |
